My wife and I are living at a family house for a few weeks while our kitchen is being redone. Picture of the house and its view (also, cars and dog) for your time. Scroll down for the question at hand.

ok, so this isn’t a bad place to hide out while our house is torn apart.

While we’re both still working and life is otherwise “normal,” we have free time in the evenings because we don’t have the usual household projects beyond basic daily chores like dishes. So I suggested we learn cribbage or something, because neither of us knows the game at all and we think it would be a lot of fun; it’s a great 1-on-1 game.

Any ideas, thoughts on the best way to learn? Should we just start playing or is it too complex? Invite a friend over who already knows how to play? Or are we going to kill each other? I’m open to other good 1-on-1 games, too.

We, too, are having our kitchen redone. Destruction/construction begins on Monday. Unfortunately, we have nowhere else to go, and could be as many as 7 weeks without a kitchen. It will be an adventure, to be sure.

As for cribbage, I’ve never played. I would suggest hitting YouTube. I’m sure there are tons of things online to teach you.

Cribbage is fun, easy to learn, it’s all pairs, runs, and counting. Most cribbage sets should come with instructions or you can find those on-line. You could also go down to the local retirement home and find some old codger from Minnesota who knows how to play and get learned.

Is it wrong of me to have angry thoughts directed to you and your situation?! I almost want to say yes, as I sit here at my cubicle desk looking at this beautiful environment on a monitor and longing for life outside of work.

That and to think if learning Cribbage was the most complicated thing I could think of for the day.

Yes, yes I can be angry at you. Now back to my mundain life.....

Youtube is a good suggestion... why do I not automatically go there first?

Can confirm. My dad is 70, Minnesotan, and loves to play Cribbage.

If I were you, I would be purposely sabotaging the kitchen remodel so that I could stay at that lake house as long as possible.

I have used YT to fix my dryer and my lawn mower.

Unless you’re family can time travel, I think your picture description probably is supposed to say “built in 1887, in the family since 1920"

Awesome driveway btw...BMW wagon and old-school forest service/fire deptartment truck

Haha, no, wait let me help. For this past weekend we had to move out of the house for family to be there. My kids (2 and 4) didn’t respond well, didn’t sleep well all weekend. Also it was cold and wet outside all weekend. Turns out the 4 year old also had an ear infection which we are now treating. We are both still working full-time and trying to move back and forth between multiple places with kids, dog, food, clothes, etc it’s a big headache. Of COURSE we are grateful to have another place to be and it’s a nice one at that. But this adventure has been 3 weeks so far and not exactly 3 weeks of sipping gin and tonic on the porch in a rocking chair. I’m trying to introduce cribbage into the mix partly as a distraction from all the other stuff that’s going on...

Cool, there actually used to be a cribbage night at the local bar, every Wednesday. I don’t think they start that up until winter, if they do it at all.

I know, I’m in no rush. My wife and 2/4 year old kids however...

Ha - fixed the date (1897). And thanks! I like our fleet. My wife’s is an X3, and all three are manual transmission.

Those club cribbage players are ruthless. They play fast and take no prisoners.

Oh man you are in the tri-light zone. One just getting out of being 3 and the other one getting ready to go in or already there. Mine are 6 & 4 now one in school & one out.

I don’t know what cribbage is, but canasta and phase 10 are the card games we play sometimes. Mostly we’ll be going g to bed shortly after the children.

Yeah... 3 was rough with our older one. I’m hoping the younger one is better, partly because we are more experienced. She’s got quite a personality at 2 but we are more likely to ignore a brief tantrum about nothing, and hopefully that will help shorten the life of such behavior.

Nah, we’re doomed either way. But man, they are cute when they’re good.

Cribbage is probably the most fun 1 on 1 game to play and still be clothed. Been playing it all my life, and while it’s not easy to learn, it’s fairly simple. I would recommend downloading a free app called cribbage classic, it’s free, and I think it has a tutorial. The problem with cribbage is that there are a ton of random rules, but it’s an absolute blast to play.

Enjoy the ‘vacation’! :)

Who said anything about clothes? The kids are in bed, you know.

But seriously, thanks - I’ll check out the app. I also have a friend who said she’d come over to help us learn, that could be good too. That way we might not have to consult a book for like, every single thing.

Well, if you aren’t wearing clothes, I can think of a few things more fun than cribbage, was the point I was making......BUT, as you already have kids, I reckon you may already know about those. :D

Ok, response accepted. I no longer feel angry, rather, I am content. Thank you for making me feel normal again.

In all seriousness, that is a beautiful location. My parents just bought a second house in Wisconsin (we live in Colorado) and I cannot wait to get away and hide up there. No cable, no internet, no cell phone covereage. Sign me up!

I too will have a 4 year old and a baby. The two dogs can fend for themselves. They can eat grass in my backyard.
